Majority of the AIAN Population Lives Outside of AIAN Areas

In 2010, 78% of the American Indian and Alaska Native (alone-or-in-combination) population lived outside of American Indian and Alaska Native areas. This percentage is similar to 2010, when 75% of the American Indian and Alaska Native (alone-or-in combination) population lived outside of American Indian and Alask Native areas.

In 2010, the largest proportion of the American Indian and Alaska Native population lived in the West (40.7%). The South had the second largest proportion (32.8%), followed by the Midwest (16.8%), and the Northeast (9.7%).

The place with the largest American Indian and Alaska Native population in 2010 was New York, NY (about 111,749 individuals). The city with the second largest American Indian and Alaska Native population in 2010 was Los Angeles, CA (about 54,236 individuals).

AIAN Areas

Of all American Indian Reservations, the Navajo Nation Reservation had the highest population in 2010, with a total population of 173,667. The Osage Reservation had the next largest population, with a total population of 47,472. However, 37,552 individuals living on the Osage reservation did not identify as American Indian or Alaska Native (making it the American Indian Reservation with the fifth largest population of American Indians and Alaska Natives).

Of all Alaska Native Village Statistical Areas, the Knik Alaska Native Village Statistical Area had the largest population in 2010, with a total population of 65,768. The Kenaitze Alaska Native Village Statistical Area had the next largest population, with a total population of 32,902. However, 3,417 individuals living on the Kenaitze Alaska Native Village Statistical Area did not identify as American Indian or Alaska Native (making it the Alaska Native Village Statistical Area with the third largest population of American Indians and Alaska Natives).
