About

Statistics refers to published numeric informaiton produced by the government, organizations, or researchers for various purposes. It can be used for research, writing papers, or other class assignments. Since there is vast statistical information, this guide can only provide access to the library collection and highlight other statistics sources of social sciences through the following pages:

Datasets vs. ready statistics

Datasests are produced by governments, organizations, and individual researchers. It is considered to be raw data that can be downloaded, manipulated, and analyzed for a different purpose, for example, Census of Population and Housing Michigan. Datasets are usually used by students who are taking statistics or research methods classes or research projects.

On the other hand, ready statistics is generated by research literature and organizations, which can be used directly with no change to support one's writing or research, for example, Michigan QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau, even though the threshold between datasets and statistics is blurred or overlapped. Ready statistics is often used by students who are writing papers or engaging in other class assignments.

This guide intends to provide access to the library's dataset collection. I also make an effort to include datasets produced by the government and other orgainzations. Please contact me at wang1r@cmich.edu for research help or suggestions.
