When linking to a site, all questions of copyright are avoided because content is not being reproduced or appropriated in any way; a faculty member is simply directing a student to the site where the content can be found. By contrast, posting PDFs or copies of an object may require permissions and payment of usage fees under copyright law, especially when the use recurs from semester to semester.
