Textbooks in the Library

CRITERIA AND PARTICIPATION

Program Inclusion Criteria

Our initial potential courses were selected by examining the following data:

  • Highest yearly enrollment, by course
  • General Education and Competency courses
  • High DEW rates and high enrollment
  • Entry-level courses to multiple programs.
  • Required textbooks only, no purchases for optional materials

Additional considerations that were taken into account were:

  • Undergraduate only courses
    • This would have the greatest impact on the greatest number of students.

CMU Libraries will purchase (1) a copy of a textbook for every 200 students in the course. Students will need to manage their time to ensure they have access to the textbook before due dates. Based on usage, additional copies of a textbook may be purchased.

Why are we offering this service?

The high cost of a college education is a frequent topic in the news. It is also a concern within the higher education community. CMU Libraries felt there was a way we could continue to meet our mission of providing scholarly resources to students for academic success, while also helping increase equity for students attending college.

Can I still join the program?

Good news! All faculty have the option to loan the textbook they are requiring for a course to the Textbooks in the Library Program. We can provide data each semester on how frequently the item was used by students. If you'd like to participate, please contact Course Reserves, coursereserves@cmich.edu
