CMU Transformative Agreements

The CMU Libraries has signed transformative agreements with the journal publishers. Under these agreements, the article processing charges (APCs) normally associated with publishing an article in these publishers’ journals are waived. There is no cost to CMU authors upon either submission or publication, and the resulting article will be published in an open format. ... Read more

Article Processing Charge (APC) & Open Access (OA)

Publishers often offer discounts or waivers on Article Processing Charges (APCs) for open access publishing.

How OA is related APC?

OA refers to the practice of making research articles freely available online. APC is a fee charged to authors to make their work available as open access (OA). This fee may be paid by the author, the author’s institution, or their research funder including APC waiver and discount depending on types of OA.

Common types of OA for different publishing models

Gold - involves publishing in journals that are fully open access, meaning their content is freely available to anyone from the moment of publication.

Greeninvolves making a version of a research article (usually the pre-print or post-print) freely available in an open access repository

Hybrid - is where authors pay an APC to make their individual articles open access in a subscription-based journal. This allows a journal to operate with both open access and subscription models

Diamond/Platinum - these journals are free for both readers and authors, meaning there are no APCs or subscription fees. They are often supported by institutions, universities, or research funding bodies.

Bronze publishing articles that are free to read on a publisher's homepage, but without clarity on the specific licenses covering an article due to a temporary publisher marketing campaign.

Open Access models (Gold, Green, Diamond, etc.) are primarily developed and championed by various stakeholders within the scholarly community, including publishers, authors, research institutions, and funders. There isn't a single creator, but rather a collaborative evolution driven by the desire for wider dissemination of research.
