Scientific Articles

Now that we know a little more about scholarly articles, let's look at the traditional scientific article. Generally, it will contain the following sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Background or Literature Review
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion
  • References

These sections may vary slightly but usually will fall into this pattern for a primary or empirical article.

A review article will usually be organized into sections or themes, to report what is found in the literature for each area. The references list will usually be longer than that found in an empirical article.

See below for more information on how to evaluate the quality of a scientific study.
