Data Repositories

Federal Funding Requirements & Agency-Designated Repositories

In August 2022, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) published new policy guidance, “Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research,” as an update to the 2013 memorandum “Expanding Public Access to the Results of Federally Funded Research.” See 2013 & 2022 Public Access Memo Comparison.

This document aims to improve consistency across Federal departments and agencies in the instructions they provide to researchers about selecting repositories for data resulting from Federally funded research.

Please note that currently, there is no definitive list of agency-designated repositories for publications or data. We will monitor and update this guide as we have more information about specific policies and agency-designated repositories.
