The following online resources will help you understand a social issue quickly. They provide background information about an issue from its beginning to today, and usually feature pros and cons:

  • CQ Researcher Coverage of the most important issues of the day written by experienced journalists, footnoted and professionally fact-checked. Full-length articles include an overview, historical background, chronology, pro/con feature, plus resources for additional research.

  • Issues and Controversies Essays on today’s crucial issues and hot topics in politics, business, education, the environment, medicine, and more. A great resource for overviews and persuasive papers and speeches.
  • Opposing Viewpoints (Gale) This series takes a pro-con approach to today’s social issues and hot topics in politics, business, education, the environment, medicine, and more. It's the perfect resource when you have to take one side of a debate or have to write a persuasive essay.
  • Gale Ebooks Contains encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other specialized reference resources on a wide range of topics. This is a great place for topic overviews.
